The Human Cost of the Shutdown: Hunger in Massachusetts
“Food is medicine.”
Halloween will bring a lot of joy, spookiness and candy tomorrow. But we should all pause with concern that nearly 1 million Massachusetts residents will celebrate Halloween on Friday night but have no idea where their next meal will come from on Saturday when SNAP benefits run out.
Separate from the political debate around reopening the government, the longer the shutdown lasts, the broader impact we all feel. Our critical Air Traffic Controllers continue to work without pay leading to delays and safety concerns. Potential delays in CMS' announcement of the home health final rule will further delay your ability to budget plan. But when 42 million American's lose their nutritional support benefits - I think we can all agree we can do better by our neighbors.
HCA wishes you a happy and festive Halloween - but we keep those who are less fortunate in our hearts through this uncertain time. A healthy community starts with a nourished one.
