Legislature to Reconsider Supplemental Home Care Funding

Legislature to Reconsider Supplemental Home Care Funding

This funding aims to cover budgetary shortfalls within the program from previous fiscal years.

As we informed you last month, $60 million in critical supplemental funding for home care services through the Department of Aging and Independence (AGE) Home Care Program has been stalled in the legislative process. This funding is urgently needed to address budgetary shortfalls from prior fiscal years and to ensure continued access to care for thousands of vulnerable older adults and individuals with disabilities.

In late May, the Massachusetts House passed a $500+ million supplemental spending package that included this home care funding. However, just days later, House and Senate leaders agreed to pare down the bill, and the home care funds were among the items removed before the bill was signed into law by Governor Healey. In mid-June, the State Senate advanced the remaining portions of the original proposal, including the home care funds, but no further action occurred — until this week, when both chambers finally outlined a path to resolve these outstanding items, including critical support for home care, hospitals, and community health centers.

The Home Care Alliance has been a strong advocate for this funding from the start and continues to press lawmakers to act. But we can’t do it alone.

We need your voice. Now is the time to speak up.

Please contact your state legislators today and urge them to prioritize the $60 million in supplemental funding for the AGE Home Care Program. Let them know:

  • This funding is essential to maintain services and prevent service reductions.
  • Without it, providers will face continued financial strain, threatening access to care for those who need it most.
  • Home care keeps people safe at home and reduces costs across the healthcare system.

Action steps you can take today:
✅ Call or email your State Representative and State Senator.
✅ Share how the funding impacts your agency, staff, and clients.
✅ Encourage colleagues and families to do the same.

We will continue to update members as the process unfolds — but your advocacy today can help make sure lawmakers understand how vital this funding is to home care and the people we serve.

Thank you for standing with us and making your voice heard. Together, we can ensure Massachusetts prioritizes home care.
