Opening the Door to Home-Based Care: A Conversation with Future Nurses

This week, the Home Care Alliance, alongside Northeast Clinical Services, had the privilege of speaking with 50 nursing students at Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. In partnership with MassHealth, this work is about more than awareness—it is about opening doors and helping future clinicians see themselves in home-based care.

What stood out was not just the level of engagement, but the intention behind it. These students asked thoughtful, grounded questions about their future. Many were curious about paths outside of traditional settings, and how they might build meaningful, sustainable careers in the home.

And then came the question that stayed with me: safety.

Before compensation, before schedules, before advancement, they asked how we are protecting the people who do this work. That speaks volumes. It reflects a generation that is not only committed to caring for others, but also clear-eyed about what they need in return: respect, support, and the ability to do their jobs safely.

If we want these clinicians to choose home-based care, we have to meet them where they are. That means building environments where they can grow, feel secure, and be proud of the work they do every day.

Because walking into a patient’s home should come with confidence, not uncertainty.
