Deporting the Workforce

Deporting the Workforce

Alfredo Orellana, an in-home caregiver of a person with severe autism, was recently detained and is facing deportation. Alfredo is a permanent U.S. Citizen green card holder and has been caring for Luke Ferris for four years and has lived in the United States since he was four years old.

The U.S. Government alleges that his green card should be revoked because he attempted to 'swindle' a store out of $200 over eight years ago - when Alfredo was battling substance abuse. Since then, he completed rehab and found his calling in caring for developmentally disabled people.

This instance highlights the shift in level of enforcement the Trump administration is implementing. For many years, law enforcement has avoided crackdowns on years-old minor infractions committed by now-permanent residents - but that is quickly changing.

This story is an example of the concern we have heard from all of you - and the workforce. And with severe shortages of labor across all industries, no one is winning in these situations - especially Alfredo's client, Luke.
