CMS Retracts OASIS Requirement for Outpatient Therapy

CMS Retracts OASIS Requirement for Outpatient Therapy

Clarification Reduces Burden for Home Health Agencies

We are pleased to share some good news for home health agencies, thanks in part to advocacy efforts from the National Association for Home Care & Hospice.

CMS has confirmed that it will retract the prior guidance requiring OASIS collection for patients receiving Part B outpatient therapy services (PT, OT, SLP) through a home health agency. Specifically:

  • CMS will revise the relevant OASIS Q&A item to provide corrected instructions on collecting payer data in relation to outpatient therapies.
  • Completion of the OASIS is not required for PT, OT, or SLP outpatient services billed under the Part B benefit when a home health plan of care is not in effect.

This clarification removes an unnecessary administrative burden and ensures OASIS requirements apply only when a home health plan of care is active.

We will share the updated OASIS Q&A item with members once it is posted by CMS.
